Here in Florida it is the most wind firm configuration for hurricanes and obtains the highest ratings for lowest insurance premiums. Also presents a better opportunity to integrate solar panels into design which is a challenge with “flat” roof profiles being altered by same. Have seen some fairly nice attempts at this in the Australian standard builders market.

No doubt flat roof is fast evolving and changing the face of architecture lately. But i am overtly not a fan of flat roofs.designs because of the perennial challenge it posits especially leakages, despite the use of the most proficient roofers. The poor maintenance culture must have aided my-argument. Or is there any postulation to help advance this narrative that flat roof are still very much among the most economic. efficient and sustainable roof type in the 21st century. irregardless of my misgivings?

Hi Jamie! Glad you found our article useful.
Touch choice. A roof with an overhang/cantilever has a very different look compared to a parapet wall. Both equally have their place in modern design but that doesn’t make your decision any easier. One thing to remember, if you decide to go with the cantilevered look, just make sure your roof doesn’t encroach into the setback. That is sometimes the case with row houses that are built to maximize the lot coverage. Good luck with your project!

I am currently designing and about to build a slow slope roof on a row house.

My big question is whether to do a front overhang and expose the 2% roof pitch from the side making it look like a shed roof, or to do no overhang (squared front) with a parapet to hide the slope, making it look like a flat roof.

This article helped me thing about it in better depth.
