Two driving forces in people is cost and convenience. Will they go back to “the old ways” because it was easy and they are busy. I farm with my husband so live in a small country town in Western Australia but I am also a Revit Draftsman helping my community either fix seriously dilapidated homes or build new. It’s hot when it’s hot and bloody cold when it’s cold. My advice to all my clients is be warm and dry first then make it a place where it’s great to congregate over a few days (tyranny of distance). We have mudrooms to slow up the ingress of mud, dirt and farm equipment into the house. We garden right up to our front door and into the patio areas as that too stops the ingress of dust and dirt. We have offices within the house although my preference is the semi-detached which alternates between office, guest room or games room depending on the phase of life and my work. When the office is in the house I work all day every day.

Now on the topic of growing your own food, over this period of time our local hardware has been inundated with people buying seedlings and other. They would buy packets of seeds for the wrong season, don’t buy slug pellets, don’t realise you need to watch your pets if you have slug pellets, need to water what you plant, need to plant in the right spot and most importantly know your soil type.

All soil needs to have active microbiology within the soil so you need to be careful which products you use because it can kill that microbiology. I have a website called The Pig Poo Lady. Basically I home deliver shit to my local town. It’s a basic website as it is a hobby driven business but is an easy read.

In short, growing your own food is great but it does require time and can be disappointing if you don’t know what you are doing at start up. I am sure there will be systems designed to suit dense living styles however it’s still worth getting your head round your garden location and what is possible before investing in excitement. Start small, don’t overplant, how many zucchini’s can you eat. Understand the size of the produce when fully grown and how big an area the plant needs, ie pumpkin plant.

It’s always difficult to know what a person knows or doesn’t, what is obvious to one and not the other. I always adhere to the KISS theory and if you are not sure what that is – Keep It Simple Stupid. Best of luck to all.

Kendel.

This is uvc germicidal lighting in the 220 nm range that doesn’t damage your eyes or skin. Discovered about 4 years ago and commercial products are coming to market.
